Homebound Dachshunds

Feeding & Precautions For Your Dachshund Puppy

Your puppy has been raised on Royal Canin Puppy Food. If you decide to change to another quality puppy food. Speak with your vet., they will give you good advise on how to do this safely. Never change your new puppy's food quickly, for this can cause diarrea &/or upset tummy. Vomiting and diarrea can be very dangerous for puppies, which may lead to dehydration. Dehydration can kill small puppies. Changing their diet must be done slowly.

Please do not let your doxie to become overweight. Dachshunds are famous for being "Chow Hounds". They love to eat. Being overweight is not only bad for their overall health, it can also be stressful for their backs.

Never feed puppies table foods. These are too fatty for their sensitive digestive systems, which may cause upset tummies and/or diarrhea. If table food is feed the health warranty in the contract will be void. Puppies love hard puppy treats. These are great for their teething. Please make sure they are made for puppies. Adult treats such as "beggin strips" and etc. are too fatty for puppies tender tummies.

Puppy Proofing:

You will need to puppy proof your home before they come home. Get down on the floor and see what they will see. Puppies will get into everything. Electrical cords and all small objects are deadly. Please secure the cords so they are out of their reach. Use baby gates to prevent your puppy from going up and down stairs. Also you may want to purchase pet stairs or ramps to prevent them from jumping up and down on beds and furniture. When carrying dachshunds always carry them like a football. Under your arm, supporting both their chest and bottom. Never pick them up by their front legs. Scoop them up from under their chest and bottom. This should be praticed for all dogs. Many dogs are injured by picking them up by their front legs. These are some precautions to keep in mind. This is not saying that they are fragile, because they are very tough little dogs. Just some ways to prevent future health problems.

Precautions:

Just a precaution...Dachshunds can have serious reactions to the Leptospirosis Vaccine! Which is part of dog's routine vaccinations. Talk to your Vet, concerning this part of the vaccine. Your Vet may recommend Benedryl after vaccinations. Ask your vet about the proper dosage, for your puppy/dog's weight.

Also.... Doxies have been known to have bad reactions to bee strings. I have experienced this, so I always keep this in mind and Benedryl on hand.

Please do not allow your dog/puppy to eat onions(raw or cooked), chocolate,  bones, garlic or any milk products. These are a just a few items to avoid.

Just because your puppy has been vaccinated once for contagious diseases such as Distemper, Parvo Virus, etc, does not mean they are immune to these diseases. The only prevention is to keep them up to date with all their vaccinations. If you fail to keep your puppy up to date in their vaccinations, the contract is null and void. While your puppy is young, you should avoid taking them places where there are other dogs, as they are still susceptible to illnesses that may be fatal to puppies.

The buyer agrees to limit exposure to unknown dogs and public areas until all vaccinations are complete.  To not allow the puppy to roam unsupervised. To have them either on a leash or in a fenced area, and to take all reasonable precautions to keep the puppy safe. (These little babies are very friendly and will run up to other animals to play, not knowing they may be in danger.)

Your new puppy will be partically potty pad trained, but they are babies and accidents will happen. When getting a puppy in the winter, I suggest that you use this method. It takes only minutes in really cold temperatures to harm your puppy.
